Brief History of Confessional poetry: Confessional poetry began its start in the mid 20th century. This form of poetry became the way in which people placed themselves more personally ion their work. Poets such as Robert Lowed, Sylvia Palm and Anne Sexton wrote personal accounts about private experiences. These poets creatively constructed works of art addressing sensitive subjects such as death, trauma, depression and relationships. Confessional poetry led to many exhales and releases of personal obstacles with having written about them.
Literary Devices Found In Poem:
In his poem Lonely in this great age" Berryman uses the literary devices assonance and simile. Using assonance in his poem Berryman gives a sense of continuity and fluidity to the poem. "leaned on his burning cane while hís old friend..." as this example from the poem this quote helps to make the reader understand Berryman. Using Simile in his poem Berryman wanted to create an image in the readers mind, giving them something to connect to. "Pound white as snow" this image helps to show what Berryman thinks and feels. |

The purpose of the confession poetry movement was to construct works of art addressing sensitive subjects. John Berryman's poem "Lonely in this great age displays exceptional reasoning to this movement. John Berryman opens up to his audience and writes about his suffering, creating a wave of intense emotion. In this poem it seems as though Berryman has lost the importance of life, leaving the reader to feel deep sadness towards him. John Berryman's poem shows true connection to Confessional poetry. |
